For example, a 0.5x wide angle lens converts a 38mm lens into a 17.1mm lens (0.5 times 38). When you're looking to achieve wide-angle images with your compact digital camera, this converter mounts to the front of your camera's lens. So if your camera has a lens that starts at (a 35mm equivalent) of 28mm, this conversion lens converts it to (0.45 x 28) about 16mm.
